Cordyceps over Coffee

Everyone loves a good cup of coffee every once and a while. But did you know that regular coffee consumption can be a symptom and proponent of adrenal fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue is when our adrenal glands, located on top of our kidneys, become overworked. This can happen when we encounter stress, whether mental, physical, or emotional. When the body is stressed, the adrenal glands pump out a cocktail of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, in order to create the fuel we need to survive. Cortisol breaks down our tissue and converts it into glucose to support and fuel us through times of stress. Cortisol is of vital importance for high-stress events that may be life-threatening (think: coming across a bear while out on a hike, yikes!) However, in the state of the world today, most people have high cortisol levels as a result of our day-to-day life, and suffer from adrenal fatigue.

As you can imagine, when we are running purely on stress hormones, we tend to reach for caffeinated beverages more often. However, the coffee and teas that give us this boost of energy are actually increasing our cortisol levels, keeping us in a vicious loop of adrenal overwork and fatigue.

This is where our fungus friends come in to steal the show. In particular one very special mushroom, Cordyceps, has been shown to support and stabilize energy levels from a cellular level, nourishing us from the inside out, and giving our adrenal glands a much needed vacation. Cordyceps, or Cordyceps militaris contains a bioactive compound called Cordycepin, which has a chemical structure very similar to adenosine triphosphate, otherwise known as ATP, or the fuel for our cells. ATP is vital to cellular processes like metabolism, as well as hormone production and regulation.
